Movies of 2024, week 15

Drive-Away Dolls directed by Ethan Coen; starring Margaret Qualley, Geraldine Viswanathan, Beanie Feldstein, Joey Slotnick, C.J. Wilson, Colman Domingo and Matt Damon; written by Ethan Coen and Tricia Cooke

To shake up their lives, two lesbian friends drive from Philadelphia to Tallahassee, unaware of the uncanny cargo hidden in their car.

Making a film for the first time without his brother Joel, Ethan Coen still makes good use of their signature moves: quirky dialogue, improbable gangsters and juicy mistaken identities.
While that might not be conducive to originality, the result is still highly entertaining thanks to the film’s humorous tone, direction of the highest caliber and its two excellent leads.

Rating: B+

Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire directed by Adam Wingard; starring Rebecca Hall, Kaylee Hottle, Dan Stevens and Brian Tyree Henry; written by Simon Barrett, Terry Rossio, Jeremy Slater and Adam Wingard

After going to the dentist, Kong returns to the Hollow Earth from where a mysterious signal is also calling to Godzilla.

Thanks to its nonsensical plot, grotesque ideas and pointless human characters now fully demoted to voice-over exposition machines, the film cements the franchise’s claim to most stupid ever.
Despite its top-of-the-line effects, even the climactic fight fails to deliver as it pits its CGI monsters against each other, a failure that can mostly be impinged on director Adam Wingard’s mediocre direction, constantly lacking in both foreshadowing and suspense.
